With a proud history of 26 centuries, Marseille is the oldest city in France. Packed with fishing boats and pleasure crafts, the Vieux Port is the heart of Marseille. Two fortresses guard the entrance to the harbor. Several vantage points offer spectacular views, including the impressive Basilica Notre Dame de la Garde, topped by a 27-foot-high gilded statue of the Virgin Mary. Sitting at one of the many outside cafes or strolling the streets of the old port area lets you experience the unpretentious charm of this city.

Prime shopping is on three streets: rue Paradis, rue St-Ferreol and rue de Rome. Centre Bourse, near the old port, has many store. Most stores close noon to 2.

Chateau d'If. This remarkably well preserved 16th century prison is the setting for The Count of Monte Cristo.
