Wake Island, strategically located in the
Pacific, is a coral atoll that is home to an air field operated by the
United States Air Force. The base was attacked by the Japanese on December
7, 1941, right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. A
heroic defense lasted until December 23.
Today, there are about 300 inhabitants, all part of the U.S. military.
There are really three islets here that enclose a shallow lagoon. |
